Crystal's 2nd Hypnobabies Birth
Crystal and Lee's Second Hypno-baby, from Dad's point of view:

Drew's arrival - 11/02

Where to start.... Well, maybe I should let you know that Drew is child number 3 for us, but Hypno-baby #2, and homebirth #1. You can read about our previous Hypno-baby experience just above this onthe Class Birth Stories page. And I won't bore you with the details of how we chose a homebirth, but it was the most awesome experience I have ever been a part of.

When my wife Crystal told me she was pregnant in March, we both knew we'd be attending another Hypnobabies class. We were able to get into the August class, but I was only able to attend the last 2 classes due to child care problems. (The last time around, I was only able to attend the first 3 classes, so now I can say I've attended a full Hypnobabies course.)

Even in August Crystal was experiencing some preterm pressure waves, so she wasn't able to completely practice all of the techniques and tools we were taught, because some of them would trigger pressure waves. Kerry gave Crystal the "Baby Stay IN" CD to stop the preterm 'labor', and it worked well. With that help, Crystal was able to hit the magical 34 week threshold and far beyond. And funny enough, once she hit that threshold, her preterm pressure waves stopped almost altogether.

So November 2nd rolls around, and I get woken up with "I think my water broke, and I'm starting to feel a bit uncomfortable" at about 7am. The adrenaline starts to wake me up, and I start preparing our bedroom for the arrival of the baby. Crystal calls the midwife on call, who lives not too far from us, and she was over in about 10 minutes. The midwife, Cheryl, helped me get everything ready, and get Crystal into a comfortable position. She checked Crystal and said she was 5 cm or a stretchy 6 cm, and that was about 7:30am or so. My focus was to get Crystal listening to the 'Birth Affirmations' CD, and get her focused, as I thought things were just starting up.

Crystal got situated and started listening to her CD. I had to go let the other midwife, Leslie in, and check on my two sons. Leslie got set up in our room, and did so very quietly. I would check in occasionally to see how things were progressing, and to ensure that Crystal was 'doing her thing'. She seemed very peaceful and focused. After the Birth Affirmations CD finished, I put in the Birth Guide CD. I left the room because I needed to check on my sons again, and the midwives were so great at letting Crystal stay focused and not interfering with her.

At one point, I heard Cheryl on the phone talking to someone saying she wouldn't be very long, so I figured things were progressing faster than at least I expected. And sure enough, Cheryl tells me it's time. I get into the room just in time to hear Crystal let out a good pushing moan. Not a scream, not a yell, just a calm moan just like Kerry described in our Hypnobabies class, and what I heard from Crystal last time around. With that sound, I saw Drew's head come out. And with the next moan, he slid right out screaming up a storm. Wow!!!! It was truly amazing to see, Drew in Crystal's arms, and she wasn't panting like she'd run a marathon. After a few minutes, I cut the chord, and the midwives finished cleaning up Drew and delivering the placenta.

I realize you aren't getting the first person perspective on how the Hypnobabies techniques worked, what it felt like using them, etc. My wife wanted me to write this to encourage any men out there who may have doubts about the effectiveness of the Hypnobabies tools. I must admit that I was skeptical the first time around with our son Michael. I figured though that I would give my wife the best chance at having a truly natural drug free childbirth. That meant going to our Hypnobabies classes, practicing hypnosis scripts with her, doing the communications exercises, etc. and not reinforcing my own skepticism on her. My skepticism waned a little bit more each class as she gained another tool, and she was able to use that tool effectively. By the time Michael arrived, and I saw first hand how she put those tools to use, and the drastic difference to our first son's birth, I was sold.

I guess the moral of the story is, if you are having doubts, but your partner wants to learn the Hypnobabies techniques, then encourage her, participate with her, and you might even learn a little bit yourself. And the best part is, you'll get to experience one of the most amazing life experiences the way it was intended: in peace, calm and tranquility.

Thanks Kerry for providing such a great service to pregnant women and their partners!! Hypnobabies is truly a blessing. Keep up the great work.

~ Lee Irwin, for Crystal, John, Michael, and Drew.
