Crystal and Lee's First Hypno-baby - WOW:
Michael David entered the world rather precipitously on Sunday, October 13th at 7:08 am (says the 911 operator). 911 operator you say? Why yes! What a story...
I suppose it goes back to our Hypnobabies classes. I have been having these preterm pressure waves for a month now. I would listen to the Hypnobabies "Baby Stay IN" CD, and my hypnosis CDs, to deal with any discomfort (and really, that's about all it was), which would help stop or slow the pressure waves, and make them feel just fine.
Fast forward to Saturday, I took a shower in the morning, and lost part of my plug. I continued to do so throughout the day on Saturday, but since my MIL was not yet here (a prerequisite to a Kaiser birth with our son being allowed to attend) I stubbornly insisted it couldn't possibly be a sign of anything. Late Saturday night, I had some more pressure waves. I went to the bathroom, and noticed what looked like watery blood, very pink, but very watery.
I called Kaiser, but since I was only feeling the pressure waves low in my uterus (which is where I felt them, from now through transition, in spite of their insistence that if it didn't start in the back, and wasn't felt in the whole uterus, it wasn't a "real contraction"), and hadn't had my water actually break, they said just to keep an eye on it, which I did. I listened to my Hypnobabies CDs, catnapped here and there, and the pressure waves came and went, some a bit more intense (no more than bad menstrual cramps though) until about 6 am. At 6 am, my water broke. I tried yelling for Lee, but he was exhausted (!?!) and didn't hear me. So I get up, grab a towel to stem the tide, and go wake him up. I take a shower, attempting to relax, in spite of the fact that it's now 6 am, none of our support people are here, and no way am I leaving my son in an unsecured hallway far from labor and delivery while I have this baby. I'll either do it without Lee, or we're all going to be in the delivery room.
Lee decides it's a good time to do some laundry (?!?! I say then, but now I'm thankful, I escaped my Kaiser birth!). I'm twisting, turning and shaking, unable to get comfortable (WHY I didn't recognize this as transition, I don't know!), but thanks to the hypnosis, so calm and quiet that Lee thinks we've got all the time in the world.
Roughly an hour after my water breaks, we're in the mini van, we're ready to go, we're pulling out of the driveway, and I feel the need to go #2. I have a sinking feeling that I know what this means, and I start with an involuntary "nooooooo no no nononono". Lee stops (still in our driveway!) and says, "do I need to call 911?". I manage to nod my head, so he pulls back into the garage, runs in the house, calls 911, and returns to find me with another pressure wave starting. As suddenly as it starts, I feel Michael's head starting to descend, and moan, "head.. head.. head.. head.. he's here - get him!" It literally took no more than 10 seconds from descent, crowning, to shooting out the side of my underwear, and Lee catching him just before he hit the floor of the mini van (nice catch, Dad!).
It was definitely an experience like no other!
The funny thing is, my anti-homebirthing husband (only because I've had horribly painful labors pre-hypnosis, and because he's a worry wart) now says we'll forgo the hospital next time (as if we'd make it?). It was "no big deal". ; )
Actually, it was so fast, we had no time for it to be a big deal, although we were both on the most amazing adrenaline high for the next 2 days. And as someone who has now done epidural, and drug free, I have to say, I'd take the short intensity of 45 minutes of transition over the week of feeling wiped out from drugs any day, but then again, drugs don't agree with me, and I had the benefit of hypnosis. : )
